Doug’s story

When Doug Stewart was ten years old, he saw Circus Smirkus and fell in love with circus arts because of how much fun everyone was having on stage. Through the performance, it was clear how much everyone loved what they were doing, and he wanted to be a part of that. At ten years old, Doug began his circus training.

At the age of twelve, Doug attended Circus Smirkus Camp, and continued to do so for five years. When he turned eighteen, he was able to join the very company that inspired him to embark on his circus adventure and toured with the Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour. He has gone onto perform with Chicago’s Midnight Circus and Cirque Us, his own circus company started when he was twenty years old.

Through Cirque Us, Doug wanted to show the world that there are so many ways to do circus, and as long as you love what you are doing, you are able to do anything! The mission of his company is to provide high-level circus to different communities while spreading the values of teamwork and remembering to not take ourselves too seriously. Cirque Us has completed three East Coast tours since the summer of 2016.

In addition to being the founder, company manager, and a performer for Cirque Us, Doug also currently teaches at Aloft Circus Arts in Chicago and just recently graduated from Columbia College Chicago.
